Love is in the air!!!

Your relationship has grown from weekend nights out, to daily phone calls and texts, to wanting to spend as much time as possible together.

And you’re now ready to take The Next Step and ask your Beloved to move in with you!

It’s a big step. It’s sometimes scary (hopefully in a good way!) but you’re secure and mature in your relationship to do it.

So here’s a few tips for couples contemplating moving in together …

When is the Right Time?

First things first – before you begin wondering how to organize a successful relocation and make the most of your shared life, you need to be sure that you actually want to move in with your boyfriend or girlfriend – that it’s the right time to do so. So, when is it right to move in together? How long should couples wait before making the big leap?

You may as well ask how long is a piece of string! Most people think that one year into a relationship is a good time to move in together (by then a couple should know pretty well if things are going well enough to consider living together), but this may feel like “rushing” to some and “dragging” to others.

No one can tell you how soon to move in together – the right time to do it is when you’re both ready for such a huge step in your relationship:

  • You know each other well. When you’re well familiar with the other person’s habits and quirks, their preferences and specific needs, their way of thinking and acting, their attitudes, beliefs, and values, you’ll know what to expect from your life together and whether it’s going to work or not.
  • You can get past arguments. Yes, there’s that old chestnut that All Couples Argue. But the thing is, it's not all the time! And couples who are in a stable, mature relationship can certainly argue, but they also know how to compromise and resolve arguments.
  • You’re comfortable talking about money, personal fears, embarrassing experiences, and other “difficult” topics – If you feel that you can freely talk about anything and everything, then you trust one another and will be able to openly discuss any problems and concerns you may have.
  • You’re on the same page about your future – You have the same expectations and long-term goals for your relationship.
  • You’re comfortable in each other’s constant company. Let’s face it, all the Covid Lockdowns of a few years ago were trying on the most chilled and relaxed couples. So if you move in together and (God Forbid!) we ever back to a Full Lockdown, do you think you’d survive being in the same house and the same company 24-7-365? A few years ago, this probably wasn’t much of a consideration, but we’re all older and wiser these days!

Moving in together should feel like a natural evolution of your relationship, and a deepening of your relationship rather than a convenience or something that you’re “expected” to do (especially if you’ve been dating for a long time!). You should never EVER feel pressured or coerced into take this step. If you are, you really really need to listen to your gut instincts! Moving in together shouldn’t something you’re doing for any other reason other than wanting to take The Next Step with your Significant Other … not because you might save money on living expenses, or your lease is up, or you finally want to get out of your parents house!

Make you decision based on what your heart tells you. Not on what social expectation are, or convenience dictates or others think!
