There are a few simple hints and tricks that will make packing for your house move that little bit less stressful.

Basics First!

Don’t put more than 30kg in any one box, to make handling easier. This is especially important if you’re shipping abroad, as you can be penalised for too-heavy boxes.

Use plenty of cushioning to absorb shock. You can wrap your items in bubble wrap, tissue paper or packing paper.

Make sure your boxes are firmly packed and don’t rattle, bulge out or bend inwards.

A Basic Packing Checklist

It’s easiest to start with out-of-season items. Then, pack the things you don’t use frequently.

Pack similar things together. Don’t be tempted to put a china figurine in the same box as the frying pan!

Keep all parts or pairs of things together. Tape or tie them securely to the item they belong to.

Wrap items individually in packing paper. Fine china, crystal and delicate items benefit from acid-free tissue paper. Use bubble wrap or a thick layer of packing paper for a good outer wrapping.

Put a 2-3″ layer of paper or corrugated board in the bottom of boxes to cushion breakables.

Build up the layers in the box – heaviest on the bottom, medium weight next and lightest items on top.

Cushion well with packing paper. Towels or lightweight blankets could also be used for padding and cushioning. The more fragile the item, the more cushioning it needs. Ensure no edges, sharp points or rims are left uncovered.

Avoid overloading boxes, but ensure a firm pack that prevents items from shifting: the box should close easily without force, but shouldn’t bend inwards.

As you finish with each carton, list the contents on the side of the carton (so they can be easily seen when stacked) and ideally also in a notebook. You could also number and code the cartons as well, so that they can quickly be put into the new rooms they should be in.
