Tips for Moving House in Autumn

Tips for Moving House in Autumn

, by Maeve Reidy, 3 min reading time

When moving house, the time of the year will have a direct impact on how stressful Moving Day is. And moving house in Autumn can have it's own challenges!

Extreme weather, in particular, can make your move more complicated and it can result in you running behind schedule or having to contend with unpredictable issues. And let’s face it, Autumn weather can be unpredictable!

However it’s often easier to prepare for an Autumn move because children are back at school too, so you can pack your boxes in peace. You won’t have to worry about finding all-day childcare on Moving Day either. Not to mention, that you will be settled into your new home in plenty of time for the Christmas festivities. So, planning a house move for September, October or November can be beneficial.

Here’s a few tips to keep in mind if you’re moving this Autumn:

Prepare for All Weathers

OK, this could probably apply to all seasons in Ireland(!) but everyone knows that in just one day it could be sunny, windy or wet! However, the weather is usually fairly mild during the autumn months, which is perfect for a house move. Try to dress for all eventualities, though, on Moving Day. For example, wear jeans and a t-shirt but also have a jumper and raincoat to hand. You will then be comfortable if the weather is mild, but you can add some layers of clothing if it starts to get chilly or it starts raining.

Avoid the Bank Holiday Break

Removal companies and van hire companies love Bank Holidays. Primarily because it’s an opportunity to raise their prices! Added to that, children can be on their mid-term break … and therefore getting under your feet. Autumn is traditionally a “quiet time” for moving house, so if you need to hire assistance in the form of vans or removers, you can often get a much cheaper rate than in High Season. There’s pros and cons, but it’s definitely a consideration to keep in mind!

Many Hands Make Light Work

The days get noticeably shorter in Autumn, so if you want to get everything moved during daylight hours, you may need some help! Either hire a Removals Firm or get a few trusted friends to help you lift all those cardboard boxes and belongings from your old place to your new place.

Have Plenty of Lightbulbs to Hand

With the evenings drawing in and dark mornings, it’s worth putting some lightbulbs into your Essentials Box! It’s entirely possible that there may be some interior or exterior lights in your new place that need to be replaced and the last thing you want to be doing on Moving Day is driving around looking for lightbulbs just so you can see what you’re doing!

Protect the Floors!

Autumn is a wonderful time of the year – lots of beautiful leaves on the ground, wonderfully moist soil with that unmistakable “loamy” aroma, every sort of precipitation from mist to mizzle to drizzle to biblical downpour! The last thing you want to be fretting about when Moving House is damp, wet, dirty leaves or mucky footprints all over your lovely new floors! And chances are, you’ll be so busy on Moving Day that you may not notice stains on the carpet until they’re dried in and have no intention of shifting! Do yourself a favour and pick up a few floor mats or plastic floor protectors ... You’re welcome!
