How to Move in A Week or Less: Day 6

How to Move in A Week or Less: Day 6

, by Maeve Reidy, 3 min reading time

By Day 6 you’re exhausted, stressed, and no doubt panicked. While you really only have 1 full day left to pack the rest of your stuff, hopefully by now you’ll see that you’re almost ready to go.

Today is the day to concentrate on all the last minute things – like clearing out the fridge, getting your essentials together and taking apart all the furniture.

Let’s get started!

Day 6 – Morning

Start with the kitchen: You probably have stuff left in the cupboards – food you were keeping on hand for meals during the week, and of course the dreaded fridge! Day 6 – the day before moving – means getting rid of anything in the fridge that won’t be coming with you to your new place, then cleaning the fridge and getting it ready to be moved, if it is coming with you.

If you’re leaving the fridge behind, leave yourself a note to check the fridge just before you leave to make sure you haven’t left anything in there that will make itself at home in an unplugged fridge!

Once you’ve tackled the kitchen, move on to the bedrooms and bathroom, checking all nooks and crannies for anything you might have left behind.

Pack your essential box: Even if you’re only moving a few streets away, it is a good idea to pack an essential box or bag with enough clothes, toiletries, medication and other things you’ll need on the first day in your new home. You’ll also have made sure that the kettle, teabags or coffee, biscuits and loo roll etc are in a box that will be unloaded first at your new home.

Day 6 – Afternoon

Disassemble all furniture, except the bed you’ll be sleeping in tonight. You’ll need to take apart all the furniture that can be taken apart. Start with the tables, spare beds, and desks. Tape bolts, screws and any other assembly items to the piece of furniture it belongs to. It’s so easy to lose these small items when moving that keeping them with the item makes it a lot easier when you come to reassemble it in your new place.

Make sure to keep your tools in your essentials box so that you can find them easily and start reassembling them when they get to your new home!

Dismantle any computers or electronics that you’ve been using during the week as you’ll need to prepare these for moving too. Give yourself time to back-up files and prepare printers etc for moving.

Garden pots and outdoor decorations: The general rule of thumb is that if it is growing in the ground, it has to stay. But all your plants that are in garden pots can come with you. They can be heavy, so make sure you have some help to get them moved.

Last minute cleaning and tidying: If you’re renting, you’ll need to clean and make sure your space is ready for the new tenants. Another bonus for leaving it clean and tidy is the chance of getting your full deposit returned! But if you’re in a hurry, you might decide for forgo the money and not clean. Just remember that you’re missing out on a possibly large sum of money!

Finally order a takeaway and have some friends and family join you for a final night in your “old” home before Moving Day!
