How to Move in a Week or Less: Day 1
Joy of joys!
Not only have you found your new home, but you’ve managed to sell your old home … result!!
But the prospective new owners want to move in next week
Eek! Don’t panic. It can be done with a little bit of concentrated organisation …
Day 1: Morning
Find transportation and contact Utility Companies
The most important part of any move is working out how to get your stuff from your old place to the new one.
Quite often the decision comes down to money and time (doesn’t everything!). So if you’re short on time, but not money, consider using a removals firm. If you’re short on both, then a DIY move (with lots of friends/family helping!) can save on the cash.
Booking a mover usually requires notice of more than a week, but if you’re moving during the off-season (any time that’s not Summer!) you should be able to find a mover that can help.
You could also hire a van to do the move yourself, although they’re also fairly booked up in the Summer months.
Call Utility Companies
If you’re responsible for paying utility bills – gas, electricity, broadband/phone, rubbish etc – then you’ll have to get your current service cancelled and/or transferred to your new place. Make sure to tell them the exact day that you’ll be moving to your new house … you don’t want to arrive at the new place with no electricity!
Get a list of your bills and go through them one by one. This job shouldn’t take more than an hour or so, but it’s important to get it done as soon as possible so you’re not charged for services you’re not using.
Day 1: Afternoon
Get Packing Supplies
Hopefully this morning you organised HOW to move your stuff to your new place. Now you can concentrate on WHAT you’ll need to pack everything up.
Boxes are the key to this! Happily, if you need boxes in a hurry you can place your order on www.boxdepot.ie and arrange to collect them from our warehouse in West Dublin. Just give us a ring beforehand, so that we can have your order ready for you.
Just remember it is is better to have too many boxes than too few!
Other packing options could include bin bags. While not ideal (and removal companies HATE them!) they’re a handy option for packing clothes, bedlinen, towels etc.
Whew! That’s a good bit of work you got done today! Now to prepare for rolling up your sleeves and getting packing on Day 2
Let's face it. Packing is a big task!
There is nothing easy about taking everything you own and putting it safely into boxes.
Packing is also deceiving ... it always feels like it's going to take a lot less time than it really does.
Having said that, if you are having trouble getting yourself to start packing, you are not along. Many of us struggle with motivation. But since your move is happening anyway, you may as well save yourself as much stress as possible and get started sooner rather than later!Read More
When is a box a box? And when is it not a box?!
Here at Box Depot we sell recycled cardboard boxes.
Many people assume that "used boxes" or "recycled boxes" are those piles of boxes you see outside shops of an evening, waiting on the binman to collect.
But it takes a lot for those boxes to have got into that state ...Read More

And we’re on to Day 4.

Day 5 means that you only have a few days left before Moving Day (eek!)
While you’re probably feeling tired and wishing your move was over already, if you look back over the last 4 days, you’ll see that you’ve accomplished loads already and packed the majority of your household space.
So for today, we’ll concentrate on storage – extra wardrobes, garages, attics, and everything in between!Read More
By Day 6 you’re exhausted, stressed, and no doubt panicked.
While you really only have 1 full day left to pack the rest of your stuff, hopefully by now you’ll see that you’re almost ready to go.
Today is the day to concentrate on all the last minute things – like clearing out the fridge, getting your essentials together and taking apart all the furniture.
Let’s get started!Read More
